Error while renaming a folder in Visual Studio

Introduction

I was getting an error while renaming a folder in Visual Studio. It was frustrating and I spent a lot of time troubleshooting. I tried repairing Visual Studio and it did not work.

Error: 

Object reference not set to an instance of the object

Solution/Work Around:

Edit the name via the property field instead of renaming. Please refer to the figure given below.
